General Crosshairs Tips:
This tutorial explains how to
download and
install custom "crosshairs"
for Half-life and Half-life Mods like Counter-strike and TFC
and DeathMatch, etc, etc. There is a
"Crosshair Editing Kit" at the bottom of the page.
The
"Crosshair Editing Kit" includes "old-style"
(before-Steam) crosshair-sprite editing software utilities
for ".pak" files and a tutorial. "SpriteWizard" and "SpriteViewer"
can still be used to turn ".bmp" files into ".spr" files.
However "gcf" files need a new program to "un-pack" packed
sprites.
The "Steam" update caused major changes to the way
crosshairs were handled in Half-life and Half-life Mods
(Modifications).
A "crosshair" is the colored "x" that you aim with in
3D shooter games. The above picture to your right is an
example of a custom "small neon-green "X" red-dot zoomed
crosshair" I recommend it for use in the Half-life Mod
"Counter-strike". Usually custom crosshairs are neon
green or red in color because these colors works best for
most situations, but people make their crosshairs all
different colors. To me, crosshairs that are neon-green with
a red-dot are very easy to see in a fire fight, while red
color crosshairs seem to work better in dark areas allowing
your eye to pick up dimly lit items next to the crosshair's
"X".
"Sprites" are the 2D art work you see on the HUD (heads up
display) on Half-life. Crosshairs are one example of a
"sprite".
I find that crosshairs that are
slanted like an "X" are better than the old "cross type"
crosshairs in 3D shooter games as this allows you to
actually be able to put the crosshairs on a person and still
identify if they are on your team or not. In 3D shooter
games a faction of a second hesitation gets you killed and
if you play on "friendly fire" servers you must properly
identify before you shoot.
How the various
Half-life Mods deal with crosshairs is different from mod to
mod. Some Mods like "Team Fortress Classic" (TFC) and
"Day of Defeat" (DoD) have a "multiple-crosshair" file that
contains different crosshairs for different weapons. In
SOME of these Mods you simply can add one single
"regular crosshair" to that Mod's "sprites" folder to
replace ALL the crosshairs in that Mod. In other
"multi-crosshair" Mods (like DoD) you have to actually
"extract" and "edit" the crosshair inside the
"multi-crosshair" file of that Mod.
In some Mods like Counter-strike you can use a "regular" and
a "zoomed" crosshair (and of course you have to use
Counter-strike's "game-generated dynamic crosshair"). In
Mods like Counter-strike, even thought it has
"multi-crosshairs", it basically has 3 sizes of crosshairs.
Counter-strike has the "game generated" crosshairs for the
pistols, it has a "regular" size (24x24 pixel) crosshair for
some intermediate ranged rifles and it several different
"zoomed" (128x128 pixels) size crosshairs for the long range
rifles. I prefer to use as few of crosshairs as possible,
that way I don't have to get used to a dozen crosshairs. In
Counter-strike one crosshair for all my zoomed rifles is
possible.
Crosshairs in Half-life Mods --used to be-- in either
a ".pak" file (called a pack file) in each Mod or in that
Mod's "sprite" folder. Now however, because of changes
brought on by the "Steam" update to Half-life and it's Mods
the "sprites" are usually contained in a a ".gcf" file that
contains sprites, sounds, and other files.
The default path to the ".gcf" files to popular Mods are:
Counter-strike:
C:\Program
Files\Steam\SteamApps\counter-strike.gcf
TFC:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\team fortress classic.gcf
DoD:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\day of defeat.gcf
Half-life Single Player:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\half-life.gcf
If you download crosshair
files you can still simply change the name of the files to
the names used in that Mod and then put the new crosshair
files in the Mod's "sprite" folder. If a Mod doesn't have a
"sprite" folder simply create one.
The default path to the "sprites"
folders to popular Mods are:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\yourEmail@yourISP.com\counter-strike\cstrike\sprites
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\yourEmail@yourISP.com\day
of defeat\dod\sprites
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\yourEmail@yourISP.com\team
fortress classic\tfc\sprites
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\yourEmail@yourISP.com\half-life\valve\tempdecal.wad |
(NOTE: Replace the "yourEmail@yourISP.com"
with your email address you used when you
registered at Steam.)
Quake2 has crosshairs that are similar to the
Half-life modes, so these instructions can "loosely" be
followed for its and other games based it it too.
To make your own crosshairs or edit your existing crosshairs or to see
other related sites or more crosshairs
besides the crosshairs here, see the Handy Links to Crosshairs & Sprites section below for other tutorials, utilities,
and downloads. If you change the size of your video screen
resolution from 800x600 to say 1024x768 or larger your
crosshairs will appear to get smaller. So you might want to
edit your crosshairs to make them a little bigger.
If you have any tested Crosshairs that you
made that you want to show off to the World, Submit YOUR
Crosshairs for posting here and we will
give you credit. (See our file submission
policy.)

Installation Instructions:

A World class Club of friendly, mature,
helpful adult online gamers.
www.ticclan.com
These crosshairs have been tested with
Counter-Strike version v1.1,TFC 1.5, Half-life
version 1.1.0.1, DoD, FireArms Mod, on Win98 and Win XP.
READ --ALL-- OF THESE INSTRUCTIONS, before
DOING ANYTHING !!!
Crosshair Installation
Instructions for Half-life Mods:
|
| 1. |
Make sure you have
a "sprites" folder in the Half-Life
mod into which you want to install these
crosshairs.
MOST Half-Life Mods already have a "sprites"
folder, but if your Mod does NOT, then
CREATE a "sprites" sub-folder
in that Mod's folder.
DO -NOT- OVER WRITE AN EXISTING "SPRITES"
FOLDER !!
These are the DEFAULT paths to folders (on your
computer) for the more popular Mods:
C:\SIERRA\HALF-LIFE\cstrike\sprites\
(for Counter-Strike)
C:\SIERRA\HALF-LIFE\valve\sprites\ (for DeathMatch)
C:\SIERRA\HALF-LIFE\tfc\sprites\
(for TFC)
C:\SIERRA\HALF-LIFE\dod\sprites\
(for DoD)
C:\SIERRA\HALF-LIFE\firearms\sprites\
(for FireArms Mod)
C:\SIERRA\HALF-LIFE\flf\sprites\
(for Front Line Force Mod)
etc
etc
|
NOTE:
If you BOUGHT the "RETAIL version" of
Counter-Strike, your DEFAULT paths will
start with this C:\SIERRA\Cstrike\ instead of this C:\SIERRA\HALF-LIFE\ .
|
| 2. |
SAVE
any ORIGINAL ".spr" crosshair
files and
make BACKUP copies, just in case you want to
switch back to your ORIGINAL crosshairs
later. In Counter-Strike and most other Half-life mods
the smaller 24x24 crosshair are called "crosshairs.spr".
In Counter-Strike, the larger 256x256 rifle zoomed
crosshair files are called "ch_sniper.spr", "ch_sniper2.spr", and
"sniper_scope.spr" and are located in your C:\SIERRA\HALF-LIFE\cstrike\sprites\
folder. For other mods other than Counter-Strike, just
use the "SprView" sprite viewer utility to identify your
crosshairs sprites in your "sprite" folder.
|
| 3. |
Double LEFT click
on the crosshairs that you want to
download and download the zipped up ".spr"
files.
|
| 4. |
UN-zip the
crosshair files into the "\sprites\"
folder for the mod you want to use the
new crosshairs in. READ the "COMPATIBILITY"
column in the download chart.
|
NOTE:
IF you or a friend need an UN-ZIPPER/ZIPPER
program, you can get a FREE un-zipper
program called "WINZIP" at www.winzip.com .
|
NOTE:
The un-zipped downloaded files with the ".spr"
extensions are the
actual crosshairs. The included ".gif"
files are there so you can see what the
crosshairs look like without having to
get into the game. The ".gif"
files are NOT needed, they are there for
your info only.
|
| 5. |
NOW, simply get in
a Counter-Strike game and check out your
new HIGHLY visible crosshairs. For
Counter-Strike crosshairs, you have to
buy the corresponding weapon to see that
weapon's ZOOMED crosshairs.
|
NOTE:
Installing a replacement "crosshairs.spr"
file in a mod, normally replaces
ALL crosshairs for that mod. Some Mods
like Counter-Strike have EXTRA
crosshairs, make sure you read the "COMPATIBILITY"
column in the download chart.
|
NOTE:
If you don't like the new crosshairs,
just delete them and reinstall the
ORIGINAL crosshairs you backed up. If you
are really motivated and into the
crosshairs craze, go see the Crosshair's Handy Link sections below and
get the software programs and tools to
learn how to actually EDIT or CREATE your
own versions of SPRITES and make your OWN
CUSTOM crosshairs.
SUBMIT YOUR
Crosshairs masterpieces you make
for posting here and we will give you
credit and post them up here for the
World to see.
|
NOTE:
The BIG fat GREEN "X" "crosshairs.spr"
file does not show for the default
weapons in Counterstrike, because Counter-Strike
is UN-like TFC, Firearms, etc. Counter-Strike's
DEFAULT (non-zoomed) crosshairs are
"HARD CODED" into the game. In
other mods, you can change ALL the
crosshairs, but in Counter-Strike you can
only change the "zoomed" (rifle) crosshairs (256x256
pixel "Large"). I know its
stupid and the default non-zoomed Counter-Strike
crosshairs suck, its because of the
boneheads that wrote the counterstrike
code. You can however change the COLOR of
the non-zoom Counterstrike crosshairs by
typing in the console command. The "adjust_crosshair"
Half-Life console command, will make it
toggle through the 4 colors each time its
entered. See the Half-life & CS Tweaks page for instructions on a
bunch of other really handy tweaks for Half-Life and
Counter-Strike.
