EVENTs & PROJECTs/ Map Terminology Handbook™ Project:

The Map Terminology Handbook is an on going Project to help all gamers better communicate their locations to one another during games. We hope this will promote better sportsmanship and teamwork for all.

WHAT is the Map Terminology Handbook™ PROJECT ?:

The Map Terminology Handbook™ is an on going Project ran by the MiGHTY [TiC]Clan  to help us and other gamers to more easily communicate their locations to one another in games. The Map Terminology Handbook™ does this by defining a very BASIC, common sense, core set of names to describe the locations and major items of ANY map of ANY game. The need for a Map Terminology Handbook™ arose when we were battling in online 3d shooters games as a team (playing Half-life games and using Roger Wilco voice communications). We needed to have a quicker and more efficient way to easily and accurately describe a location or an item on a map to one another. We found that not being able to quickly and easily describe where we at (to get re-enforcements), usually resulted in our troops getting slaughtered, because of mis-communications. The Map Terminology Handbook™ will help your crew of guys to better communicate their location to one another more easily, we make all our guys study it!

HOW do you use the Map Terminology Handbook™ ?:

The Map Terminology Handbook™ is based upon a core set of the most often used words or terms to be used by gamers during online internet games. To make sure that everyone in your crew understands how to describe an area so that all your other guys will understand them, make sure that ALL your guys read this tutorial. To find a name or a word (a term) to describe an area or item on the map, look down the list for a word that is similar to the what you think that item or location should be called. Then look at the example pictures to visually verify that that term is what you are looking for. Another way to figure out what to call something, is to look at all the pictures until you see a picture of what you are looking for, then see what  name it is listed by.

General Guidelines used to describe an item or location:

The Map Terminology Handbook™ is based upon a basic principle that to describe where you are in on/in a game's map can be broken down into either of (2) basic categories:

1.  next to an
ITEM
2. or at a
LOCATION .

An "ITEM" is anything you can load on to the back of a single tractor trailer.

A LOCATION can typically be anything that you could not load unto a tractor trailer  (example: a river is a location, a mailbox is an item).

Items and locations can farther described by the
SIZE of it, what team it belongs to or OWNERSHIP, the DIRECTION you are oriented from it, it's COLOR, what MATERIAL it is are made of.

Something's size can be:
 big, small, or normal.

The ownership of an item can be broken down into:
your team, or the enemy's team.

As far as direction, generally you can be:
in, on, at, beside, under, at the bottom of, on top of, on the left, right, front, rear,  entrance, exit, or near some thing.

For color we use the basic colors:
black, white, gray, green, red, blue, yellow, purple, light or dark.

The most encountered materials on a 3D shooter game are:
wood, metal, rock, brick, drywall, glass.

An example of describing where you are by using our terms would be:

"I am waiting by the steps in the CT respawn."

CREDITS:

The Map Terminology Handbook™ is a never ending Project ran by our Club the MiGHTY [TiC] 'TALK  is CHEAP' Clan. This Project was originally started by a team of volunteers of our Club under the name "Map Terminology Project", but it's first start stalled and then fell by the way side. Later in the Spring of 2002 we re-started the Map Terminology Handbook™ Project with a vengeance with well defined goals and with phases to the overall  Project and a timeline for the first phase. ;-) These are the guys that helped us kick re-start this Map Terminology Handbook™ Project and get it cranked up, get results,  and make it a reality: [TiC-G]MeanGoof, [TiC-G]Klithor, [TiC-BC]Wheelman, [TiC-BC]Itsbry, [TiC]Hitter, [TiC]Big, [TiC]EVIL. The initial phase of this Project was completed 21 July, 2002.

"If I ever make a map, I would draw an East, West, North, South pointer on it at each team's  respawn. If I ever made a game, I would have GPS co-ordinates of the map as part of the HUD. It would make it more team friendly."
